Friday builds foam-core paddles under a raw carbon face, and that is the whole point of the brand rather than a line on a spec sheet. Most paddles at this level of the market use a polypropylene honeycomb core. Friday fills the core with moulded foam instead, and the difference is something you feel on the soft shots long before you see it on the scoreboard. What a foam core actually does

Honeycomb is a grid of hollow cells. It is light, it is consistent, and it rebounds quickly, which is why it became the default. Foam is denser and more damped, so the ball stays on the face a fraction longer before it leaves. That extra dwell time is what gives you the ability to shape a reset, take pace off a drive, and drop a third shot into the kitchen instead of floating it to somebody's forehand.

Foam also fills the space right out to the edge of the frame, so the face is more uniform from the middle to the corners. In practice that means a bigger usable sweet spot and less of a dead thud when you catch one near the edge guard. The trade is weight and a slightly muted feel: a foam paddle rarely feels as lively off the face as a stiff honeycomb build, and if you win points purely by hitting the ball hard, you may not enjoy it.

The three models

The Aura is the one we hand to most intermediate players, and it is the paddle most likely to improve somebody's game on this page. Forgiving, soft in the hands, and available elongated or hybrid in 16mm. If your dinks are fine but your resets sit up, this is the paddle.

The Aura Pro stiffens the face for more pop while keeping the foam behind it, so you gain pace on the drive without losing all of the touch. Available elongated or hybrid, plus two finishes: Creamsicle and Metallic Blue.

The Fever 102 Gen 3 is the entry point, and it is a genuinely good first serious paddle rather than a stripped-back one. It suits a starter or an intermediate equally, which is why it sits in both our starter and intermediate collections.

Elongated or hybrid

Elongated gives you reach at the baseline and leverage on the drive, at the cost of a smaller sweet spot and a higher swing weight. Hybrid pulls the head back in, so it is quicker in the hands and more forgiving when you catch one off-centre, which is what most doubles players actually need. If you play mostly doubles and most of your points end at the kitchen line, take the hybrid.

The honest comparison

The Aura Pro is a very good paddle, and it lands right beside the Six Zero Coral Pro in both money and intent. Coral is softer and better at the kitchen line. The Aura Pro hits harder and gives you more free pace on the drive. Neither is better in the abstract, so pick the one that matches how you actually win points, not the one with the better spec sheet. Is the Fever 102 enough paddle to grow into? For a first or second paddle, comfortably. Most players outgrow their technique long before they outgrow it.
