How the paddles play

The Six Zero Quartz is a 16mm widebody with a T300 raw carbon fibre face, at about 224 g. In plain terms: a big sweet spot, a soft touch at the kitchen and enough grip on the face to start learning spin. It leans control and all-court, which is what a new player needs, because keeping the ball in play wins far more points in the first year than hitting it hard. It is also the paddle people keep as a spare once they move up, so nothing in this set is wasted.

Who it suits

• Two people starting together who play somewhere a net is already up: a club, a council court or a lined tennis court
• A player with their own paddle who wants a second one for a partner or a guest
• Anyone giving a pickleball set as a gift who is not sure a net would get used

Starter set, or something smaller

If the budget is tighter, the Franklin Dagger Set gets two people onto a court with USA Pickleball approved fibreglass paddles and four X-40 balls. The difference is the paddle: fibreglass is forgiving on day one, and a raw carbon face like the Quartz is the one you will still be happy with a year in.
