Pickleball Overgrip Australia: How to Pick and Wrap (2026)

Overgrip vs replacement grip, what to look for, how to wrap one, and how often to replace it, using the Australian-stocked Pickleball Labs FlexTac line.

A fresh pickleball overgrip is the cheapest upgrade in the game, and it is the one most Australian players leave far too long. Twenty minutes into a hot Saturday session your hands go, the handle turns slick, and suddenly you are gripping harder to hold onto a paddle that is sliding around. A five dollar wrap fixes that. This guide covers what a pickleball overgrip actually does, how to choose one, how to wrap it properly, and how often to replace it, using the Pickleball Labs FlexTac line we wrap our own paddles in as the worked example.

Quick disclosure before we start: FlexTac is our own house line, so treat this as us backing our own gear. We have kept the specs and the advice honest, and everything below is true of any decent overgrip, not just ours.

What a pickleball overgrip actually is

Two different things live on your handle and people mix them up constantly. The replacement grip is the thick cushioned layer fitted to the paddle at the factory. It is structural, it sets your base handle size, and you rarely touch it. The overgrip is the thin layer you wrap over the top of it. It is meant to be consumed and replaced, it adds tack and sweat control, and it barely changes the handle size.

You do not strip the original grip to fit an overgrip. It goes straight over the top. That is the whole appeal: for a few dollars you refresh the feel of the paddle without pulling anything apart, and when it wears out you peel it off and wrap a new one. Overgrip versus replacement grip is really a question of how often you want to do it, and for most players the answer is the overgrip, often.

What to look for in a pickleball overgrip

Three things separate a good overgrip from a slippery disappointment.

  • Tack that lasts. Plenty of grips feel great in the shop and go slick after one session. What you want is tack that holds through a full hit, not just the first twenty minutes. Australian summer pickleball is a sweaty-hands problem more than a technique problem, so this matters more here than the marketing usually admits.
  • Thickness. A thin overgrip (around 0.7mm) builds the handle slightly without changing the size you have already got used to. If you like a chunkier handle you can run two, which is a cheaper and more adjustable way to size up than buying a new replacement grip.
  • Absorbency and texture. A fine textured surface gives your palm something to hold when the sweat starts, where a smooth grip just gets greasy. High absorbency keeps that texture working through the session.

FlexTac is a polyurethane grip built around exactly those three points: a fine textured, tacky surface rather than a smooth one, high absorbency, and anti-slip that is made to last rather than fade after one hit. Here are the full specs.

How to wrap a pickleball overgrip

Wrapping a grip looks fiddly the first time and takes about two minutes once you have done it once.

  1. Peel the backing tape and find the tapered starting end. Stick that end to the bottom of the handle, just above the butt cap, at a slight angle.
  2. Wrap upward around the handle, keeping the tape taut. Overlap each turn by two to three millimetres so there are no gaps and no bunching.
  3. Follow the angle of the handle so the wrap climbs evenly. Right-handers usually wrap anticlockwise looking down the handle, left-handers the other way, so the seam runs with your hand.
  4. Finish near the top of the handle, cut the excess at an angle, and secure it with the finishing tape that comes in the pack.
  5. Want a thicker handle? Run a second overgrip straight over the first. Two 0.7mm wraps is roughly one grip size up.

If you have never regripped before and want the wider context on grips, lead tape and the rest of the handle setup, our pickleball paddle accessories explainer walks through the whole lot.

When to regrip, and how many you actually need

An overgrip is a consumable. Most club players get four to six sessions out of one before the tack fades and it starts feeling slick again. If you notice yourself squeezing the handle harder to stop it turning, that is the tell, it is done.

The maths follows from that. Play twice a week and a single grip lasts you two to three weeks, so buying one at a time means you are constantly out. The multipacks are the same grip, cheaper per wrap, and mean you always have a fresh one in the bag:

Pack Price Per grip
Single $6.00 $6.00
3-pack $12.00 $4.00
6-pack $22.00 $3.67
12-pack $40.00 $3.33

The 6-pack is the one we point most regular players at: about three months of twice-a-week play, and it comes in single colours or a mixed set. Kitting out a household or a club? The 12-pack drops it to $3.33 a wrap.

Colours, and a small point about them

FlexTac comes in white, black, pink and blue. White shows grime fastest, which sounds like a downside but is actually a handy reminder that it is time to swap. Black hides it. Pink and blue are there because a lot of people like their overgrip to match the paddle, and there is no performance difference between them. Pick whatever you will notice needs replacing.

The short version

A pickleball overgrip is the cheapest, fastest upgrade you can make, and the one worth staying on top of. Look for lasting tack, a thin 0.7mm build and a textured surface, wrap it snug with a small overlap, and replace it every four to six sessions before it goes slick. If you play regularly, buy the pack rather than the single so you are never caught with a greasy handle at the kitchen line.
