Power Pickleball Paddles
Power comes from stiffness and from where the mass sits, not from the word on the box. Every paddle on the market is capped at the same face area and governed by the same deflection limits, so nobody is smuggling in a trampoline. What separates a genuine power paddle is how little energy the frame wastes and how much mass is travelling when you make contact. Both are things you can check.
The three levers that actually produce pace
1. Frame stiffness
A thermoformed paddle is pressed as one piece with the edges fused rather than glued, and a foam-injected perimeter fills the void around the honeycomb core. Both stop the frame flexing. Energy that a softer build absorbs and turns into vibration gets returned to the ball instead. This is the largest single contributor to modern paddle power, and it is why the category changed so much between paddle generations. 2. Core thickness
A 14mm core cushions less and rebounds faster, so the ball leaves quicker and harder. The cost is a tighter sweet spot and less margin on anything soft. A 16mm core in a stiff thermoformed frame is the more common compromise now, because the frame supplies the pace and the core keeps enough dwell that you can still reset. If you want maximum pace and you already finish points well, 14mm. If you want pace without losing the kitchen, 16mm in a stiff build.
3. Swing weight and shape
Swing weight is how heavy the paddle feels while it is moving, and more mass further from your hand means more plough-through on a drive. It also means the paddle arrives later when hands speed up at the kitchen, which is the trade every power paddle makes. Elongated shapes lean furthest into it: a longer lever for serves and drives, and more face to brush the ball, in exchange for a narrower and higher sweet spot. Widebody power paddles exist and are more forgiving, but they give up leverage.
The part nobody advertises
Stiff paddles are honest paddles. They transmit what you did, including the parts you would rather they smoothed over, and off-centre contacts feel and sound wrong. That is not a defect, it is the same property that produces the pace. It also means a power paddle is a poor learning tool: it punishes exactly the contacts a developing player is still making. If your drive is not yet repeatable, all-court is the better buy.

How to choose within the category
- Baseline driver, two-handed backhand. Elongated, 14mm or a stiff 16mm, longer handle for leverage.
- You want pace but still play the kitchen. A stiff 16mm hybrid. Most of the pace, most of the reset.
- You mishit under pressure. Widebody power, or add lead tape at 3 and 9 to lift twist weight.
- Your problem is actually spin, not pace. Look at spin paddles. Heavy topspin and heavy pace are different jobs.
Common questions
Will a power paddle make my serve and drive better?
It will make them faster if your technique already produces clean contact. It will not fix a swing that is not grooved, and it will make your mishits worse because the frame does not absorb them. Pace is the easiest thing to add to a pickleball game and the least often decisive at club level, which is worth weighing before you buy for it.
Do I lose touch with a power paddle?
Some. A stiff frame returns energy on soft shots too, so resets need a more deliberate hand. A 16mm core in a stiff build gets most of it back. If your losses come from drops that float rather than drives that lack pace, control paddles are the honest answer.
Are heavier paddles more powerful?
Not directly. Where the mass sits matters more than how much there is. Two paddles of identical static weight can feel a hundred grams apart depending on distribution, and swing weight is the number that predicts plough-through. Lead tape at 12 o'clock adds it; tape in the handle removes it.
Is 14mm always more powerful than 16mm?
All else equal, yes, but all else is rarely equal. A stiff thermoformed 16mm paddle will out-hit a soft 14mm one comfortably. Judge the build first and the core thickness second.
